Over the weekend a query came rolling in from one Emi Fu (hello! it's nice to meet you). It's one of those questions that I get fairly often but I find difficult to answer - mainly because there are so many inspirational people out there whose lives I would love to, well, in a way imitate. But at the same time, none of them embody my exact ideal.
Emi Fu: Your new blog is gorgeous..and the name fits you perfectly. Thanks also for always sharing the latest with us. It make for great weekend reads. Lavishley..if there is someone who you would love to emulate in terms of personal style with the knack for throwing beautiful parties who would it be?
So I thought I'd share the full run down of women (and one man) who've got the whole party throwing/hosting/entertaining thing down (in my humble opinion), and what exactly it is I like about them.
Desiree Rogers - The Ultimate Social Engineer.
Before she was booted from the White House for (understandably) being too ostentatious (when the vast majority of Americans have hit hard times), she threw some of the biggest and most brilliant get togethers to ever grace the porticos of the White House. Ms. Rogers, the former White House Social Secretary (and the ultimate social engineer), has an amazing ability to combine politics with the arts, high fashion, classical and contemporary music, writers, thinkers, technopreneurs and do-gooders. Her White House events are the stuff of legend, and they will live on far longer than the temporary tarnishing of her name. I'm excited to see what she gets up to next. Oh, and yes, she carries off Oscar de la Renta absurdly well.
Eddie Ross - Designer/Decorator/Entertainer Extraordinare
While the resume is long and luminous, and he's perhaps most famous for being the eye behind One King's Lane, I love Eddie Ross for his dedication to creating beautiful table settings. The entertaining tab on his blog is filled with images of beautiful cakes and plates, ideas for entertaining and more, and I love looking to him for Occasion-inspiration (Thanksgiving, Easter, Christmas, etc). His talents aren't limited to the table top - he did up this beautiful space for Elle Decor.
Mrs. Lilien - The Preppy Perfect Hostess with the Mostest!
Mrs Lilien is what you get when you take Martha Stewart, deck her head to toe in the preppy poppy bright colours of Kate Spade, and arm her with spiked lemonade. I love this lady. She does dos like no other, and counts Simon Doonan as an accomplice to the fabulous soirees she creates. Her ABOUT page is more than enough to make me want to be friends with her - and then she has an entire blog filled with lively, lovely things to reinforce that fabulousness. Of course, the fact that she more than enjoys Mixing on the Job just makes me love her all the more!
Sunday Suppers - Going local with lots of love
This dynamic duo is probably my favourite pair in the entertaining sphere. A labour of love by Karen Mordechai and Lizzy Sall, Sunday Suppers is a cooking-class-dining-experience that pairs new-friends and food in a lovely waterfront loft in Brooklyn, NY. The two regularly host groups of strangers in the light-filled space, the classes are taught by a roster of local chefs, and the food is local, organic and market fresh. At the end, everyone sits down to feast like old friends! It's a brilliant concept that I would love to embark on in Singapore - if only I had a waterfront loft to host them out of! Plus I think it would be a great way for singles to mingle (do you think SDN would support my endeavour?)
